the science behind sauna blankets
Far-Infrared Therapy: Heat That Starts From Within.
Traditional saunas work by heating the air around you to extreme temperatures (80–100°C), which then conducts heat into your body through the skin. This external-to-internal heat transfer is energy inefficient and requires high temperatures that many people find uncomfortable or physiologically stressful — particularly for those with cardiovascular sensitivities.
Far-infrared (FIR) therapy works on an entirely different principle. Far-infrared light occupies a specific wavelength range (4–1000 micrometers) on the electromagnetic spectrum that is uniquely absorbed by the water molecules present in human body tissue. Rather than heating the air, FIR energy penetrates 4–6cm below the skin surface, directly elevating the temperature of soft tissues, muscles, and the lymphatic system from the inside out. This means your core body temperature rises efficiently at significantly lower external temperatures (45–65°C) — producing a deeper, more therapeutic sweat with far less cardiovascular stress.
This mechanism of action is why far-infrared therapy has been the subject of extensive research in the fields of detoxification, cardiovascular health, chronic pain management, and athletic recovery — with over 700 peer-reviewed studies published on its therapeutic applications.
SIX BENEFITS. ONE SESSION
Detox. Recover. Glow. Relax. All in 45 Minutes.
A single far-infrared sauna blanket session activates multiple simultaneous physiological responses — making it one of the most time-efficient wellness investments available.
Deep sweating mobilises water-soluble toxins stored in subcutaneous fat — including heavy metals, environmental pollutants, and metabolic waste products — excreting them through the sweat glands at a rate that normal thermoregulatory sweating cannot match. Simultaneously, the thermal effect on soft tissues and the lymphatic system accelerates post-exercise muscle recovery, reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and supports joint mobility.
The cardiovascular effect of a far-infrared session is comparable to moderate aerobic exercise — heart rate and cardiac output increase to support the body's thermoregulatory response, burning 300–600 calories per session in healthy individuals. Skin quality improves through increased dermal circulation, enhanced nutrient delivery to skin cells, and the excretion of skin-clogging impurities through sweat. Finally, the deep physical relaxation response — mediated by the parasympathetic nervous system — reduces cortisol, improves sleep quality, and provides measurable stress relief that extends hours beyond each session.
FAQs
What is far-infrared therapy and how does the sauna blanket work?
Far-infrared (FIR) rays are a safe wavelength of light that penetrates up to 4cm below the skin's surface, generating heat from within the body. Unlike a traditional sauna that heats the air around you, the infrared blanket heats your body directly — producing a deeper, more efficient sweat at a lower external temperature.
What are the benefits?
- Deep detoxification through sweat
- Improved blood circulation
- Muscle relaxation and recovery
- Temporary reduction in water retention and bloating
- Calorie burn (equivalent to moderate exercise during a session)
- Stress relief and improved sleep quality
- Skin radiance improvement through increased circulation
How long is each session?
Begin with 20–30 minute sessions. Once comfortable, you can extend to 45–60 minutes. We recommend starting at a lower temperature setting and gradually increasing.
How often can I use it?
3–5 times per week is ideal. Daily use is safe for healthy individuals but ensure proper hydration.
What should I wear inside the blanket?
Lightweight, breathable clothing such as cotton leggings and a long-sleeve shirt. Avoid synthetics. Always place a towel inside the blanket to absorb perspiration.
How much water should I drink?
Drink at least 500ml–1L of water before your session and replenish with electrolytes afterward. Proper hydration is essential.
Will I lose weight from using it?
Any weight loss immediately after a session is water weight from sweating. However, consistent use supports metabolism, circulation, and the body's natural detox processes which can contribute to a wellness routine that supports weight management goals.
Contraindications
The Infrared Sauna Blanket involves significant body heating. Please do not use if any of the following apply — this list is especially important:
- You are pregnant
- You have cardiovascular disease, heart conditions, or high/low blood pressure — consult your doctor
- You have diabetes — infrared heat affects blood sugar levels and circulation; consult your doctor
- You have multiple sclerosis (MS) — heat can temporarily worsen MS symptoms
- You have lupus or other autoimmune conditions — heat may trigger flare-ups
- You take medications that impair sweating or heat regulation (certain antihistamines, diuretics, psychiatric medications) — consult your doctor
- You have fever or an active infection/illness — never use when unwell
- You have open wounds, skin infections, or active rashes
- You have metal implants — the area around metal implants may heat unevenly
- You have kidney disease — impaired ability to process the increased metabolic activity
- You are under 18 years of age
- You have claustrophobia — consult a doctor and consider if this therapy is suitable
- You have consumed alcohol within the past 4 hours
This is our highest-risk device and the contraindications list is longer than others. If you have ANY pre-existing medical condition, consult your doctor before using the sauna blanket. Stop use immediately if you feel faint, dizzy, nauseous, or have heart palpitations.
Sensitivity Test
The sauna blanket requires a careful first-use approach rather than a traditional skin sensitivity test.
First session protocol:
- Hydrate well — drink 500ml of water 30 minutes before starting
- Set the blanket to the lowest temperature setting
- Limit your first session to 15 minutes only
- Keep one arm outside the blanket to self-monitor comfort
- Exit immediately if you feel dizzy, faint, or nauseous
After your first session:
- Lie down and rest for 5–10 minutes before standing
- Drink water or an electrolyte drink immediately
- Shower with cool or lukewarm water
- Eat a light snack if you feel lightheaded
Normal during and after use:
- Profuse sweating — expected and normal
- Feeling of warmth and relaxation
- Slight dizziness upon first standing — take your time
Stop immediately and exit if:
- Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat
- Severe dizziness or feeling faint
- Nausea or vomiting
- Difficulty breathing
- Extreme discomfort or claustrophobic panic
Building up safely:
15 min → 20 min → 30 min → 45 min over 3–4 weeks. Increase temperature gradually as your body adapts.
